Description
Lesson Sequence
Pre-Reading (10 min) Activate Prior Knowledge & Vocabulary Introduce the topic of bees. Ask students what they already know about bees and their role in the garden. Introduce and explain key vocabulary: pollination, nectar, pollen, and crucial.
During Reading (10 min), Guided Reading and Modelling, the teacher reads the text aloud with expression. Periodically, the teacher pauses to model the "think-aloud" strategy, asking questions such as, "What is the author mostly telling us right now?" and "Is this an important detail or just an interesting fact?" Students follow along in their own copies.
During Reading (5 min) Collaborative Practice. After the first read, guide students in a "Two-Column Notes" activity. Together, determine the main idea (e.g., "Bees are important for the world because they help plants grow") and list supporting details from the text.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to determine the main idea of a short, original informational text and identify at least three supporting details.
