This framework can be adapted for various subjects and English proficiency levels. Science and English will be used. Topic: (e.g., Analysing a scientific claim)

Description

Part 1: Problem Identification (10 minutes)

  1. Introduce the idea that critical thinking is essential for solving everyday problems, from playground conflicts to project management issues.
  2. Present a clear, concise "Problem Focus" to the students (e.g., "The classroom is always messy," "Our team consistently misses deadlines," "The school garden is neglected")

Part 2: The "Five Whys" Technique (10 minutes)

The "Five Whys" is an iterative interrogative technique used to explore the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a particular problem.

  1. Explain the method: State the problem, then ask "Why?" five times, using the answer to the previous "why" as the basis for the next question.
  2. Model the first step as a class/group activity. (Example: Problem: The garden is neglected. Why? Lack of water.)
  3. Divide. Have the students push past surface-level answers to uncover the root cause.

Part 3: Solution Generation and Evaluation (20 minutes)

  1. Brainstorm discussion: solutions that address the root cause (Why 5), not just the symptoms (Why 1).
  2. Evaluate the feasibility and impact of each proposed solution using a simple matrix or class vote. (e.g., "Replacing the hose" is a short-term fix; "Lobbying decision-makers for inclusion in the budget process" is a long-term critical thinking solution).

Part 4: Action Plan and Reflection (10 minutes)

  1. Develop a simple action plan for the chosen solution.
  2. Reflect as a whole group on the process:
    • "How did asking 'why' multiple times change your perspective on the problem?"
    • "Why is it important to look for root causes rather than just fixing symptoms?"
