A 「わしつ」 is a room in the traditional Japanese style. The room in the photo has these things:

•たたみ (tatami) = tatami mat

•びょうぶ (byōbu) = folding screen

•はな (hana) = flowers

•こうよう (kōyō) = autumn leaves

「たたみ」 is a floor covering made from a grass called igusa (rush grass). In Japan, the size of a room is sometimes described by the number of tatami mats. For example, 「ろくじょうの へや」 is a room that fits 6 tatami mats. 「じょう」 is the word for counting tatami mats.

Manners in a Japanese-Style Room

On tatami, you take off your shoes. You also take off your slippers. The black edge of a tatami mat is called 「へり」 (heri). Some people try not to step on the 「へり」.

Useful Expressions

A Few Small Points

「〜て ください」 is a polite way to make a request.

•ぬぐ → ぬいで ください (Please take off.)

•すわる → すわって ください (Please sit.)

The 「ね」 in 「きれいですね」 is used to ask for the other person's agreement, as in "Don't you think so?" It is very common in conversation with friends.
