About Me
Hi! I’m Melony, originally from Jamaica, and I’ve been teaching English for more than 10 years in both classroom and online settings. I currently live in Europe and am completing my Doctorate in Education. I also hold a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management and a TEFL qualification. Teaching has taken me into many different spaces over the years, but one of the most important chapters of my life and career was the almost six years I spent living and teaching in Japan.
My Life in Japan
I was based in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and during those years Japan became much more than simply the place where I worked. I travelled around the country, explored cities such as Kyoto, experienced the changing seasons, discovered beautiful gardens and exhibitions, and made friendships that became a huge part of my life there. Some of my favourite memories are the simple ones: exploring a city with friends, taking silly photo-booth pictures, finding an amazing view, or coming across something beautiful when I wasn’t expecting it. And, of course, living in Hokkaido meant surviving some VERY cold winters, which was quite an experience for someone from Jamaica!
My Teaching Style
Teaching Japanese students also shaped the way I teach today. One thing I learned is that knowing English and feeling confident enough to actually use it can be two very different things. Many learners know much more than they think they do but become nervous when it is time to speak. Because of this, I try to create a relaxed and supportive environment where you can speak freely, make mistakes, ask questions and build your confidence naturally. English does not always have to feel like studying for an examination or memorising grammar rules. Sometimes the best way to improve is simply through interesting, meaningful conversation.
A Little More About Me
Outside of teaching and studying, I love travelling, discovering new places, watching movies and TV series, and learning about different cultures. I’m always happy to talk about food, travel, everyday life, Japan, entertainment, culture or almost anything else that interests you. Whether you want to practise everyday conversation, become more confident speaking English, improve your Business English, or simply have an enjoyable conversation, I would be happy to meet you. I look forward to seeing you on Cafetalk!
