Topic: Email Etiquette – Avoiding Mistakes & Improving Tone
Level: Intermediate (adaptable)
Objective:

  • Identify and correct common email mistakes
  • Use polite, professional request language
Warm up (5 min)
Discuss and ellicit from students what kind of emails do they write 
Have they ever worried that the emails are too direct and not professional

Presentation (7 min)
Task: Write a short email (2-3 sentences), to your manager, requesting a report.
This can be done in the "chat" function.

Error correction - using the student's email
Focus on : 1 Tone 
                2 Structure - greeting and closing
                3 Clarity

Practice (10 min)
Upgrade the email - small changes makes big differences 
Introduce polite language - ellicit examples from student
- Would you please
- Would you mind
- I would appreciate if.
Which is more formal - ellicit 
Task : Make the following instructions more polite 
- Send me the file 
- Reply quickly
- Fix this today

Production (5 min)
Now let’s go back to your original email—rewrite it using what we practised

Feedback and Take-Away (3 min)
  • Avoid very direct language
  • Use polite phrases (“Could you…”)
  • Always include a greeting and closing
