I begin most of my lessons with a comprehension, the student will spend time reading the comprehension and I will ask questions. This gives me a fairly good idea of the student's level of reading and understanding.
I will incorporate games into the lesson, this often helps the students to relax and I feel this always offers a sense of calmness to the lesson, especially if the student is shy and nervous.
I encourage the student to take his/her time while reading and to read the material many times over as this is very important for pronunciation and understanding. I encourage students to ask me questions during the lesson, no question is a silly question!
My lesson includes props if I am teaching children. I encourage students to give me an example using a new word that I have taught, this allows the student to practice using the word and it also gives me a good idea of whether the student has in fact understood the word or phrase.
Topics that we will cover are quite extensive and age-appropriate. For children and beginners, I will cover basic vocabulary for example: What is your name? Where do you live? We will talk about animals, colours, numbers, family, food and more. I will show pictures of the topic and ask the student to name the picture and perhaps tell me about the picture, for example: where would you find horses? What do they like to eat?
Teaching more advanced students will require more thought provoking lesson material. I will introduce role play for example: 'Where should we go out to eat?' 'Oh, I know! I would like to go to the new Italian restaurant near the mall.' I would introduce a menu and ask the student to discuss the menu options and how to order from the waiter/waitress.
If I choose to give the student homework, I would encourage him/her to write a short story or a couple of phrases using the new words they have learnt.
