Junior High English Lesson – Close Reading and Vocabulary
Designed for: Junior High School Student
Lesson type: One-on-one, focused reading and speaking
Goal: Build reading skills, expand vocabulary, and learn to use new words in sentences
Lesson Flow
Warm-up: Word Chain Game (5 minutes)
We will begin with a quick word game to help you think in English.
How it works:

I say a word from today’s reading, for example, “forest.”

You say the first word that comes to your mind, for example, “trees.”

We go back and forth for a few turns.

We talk about any interesting words you use.
Close Reading and Discussion (10 minutes)
We will read a short passage together, check new words, and use them in simple sentences.
Short Reading Passage:
"Liam loves to explore the small forest near his house. Every Saturday, he takes his notebook and writes about the birds he sees and the sounds he hears. Sometimes, he finds a quiet spot to read his favourite stories. Liam feels calm and happy when he is surrounded by trees and animals."
What we will do:

Read the passage slowly together.

Talk about any new words. For example: explore, surrounded, calm.

You will read it aloud to practice clear pronunciation.

Pick three words and make your own sentences. For example:

"I like to explore new places."

"I feel calm when I listen to music."

Mini Wrap-up: Make It Yours (5 minutes)
To end, we will take one or two sentences from the passage and make them better or more interesting.
Example:
Original: "Liam loves to explore the small forest."
Better: "Liam loves to explore the small forest behind his house with his notebook in his hand."
This shows you how to add details to your sentences and make them your own.
