Learn to build and play the Hawaiian Pakini Bass

The Hawaiian Pakini Bass is well known to those who are familiar with the History of Hawaiian Music. The Pakini is the local Hawaiian version of the Washtub Bass used in American Bluegrass and Jog Band Music. All versions evolve from the African Instrument The Ground Gourd. You will find a version of this instrument worldwide in every country that has poor people and a bass played in their cultural music. It is also know as the Gutbucket in the U.S., the Skiffle Bass or Tea Chest Bass in England, New Zealand and Australia where it is also called the Bush Bass. I was introduced to the Washtub Bass as a child from a friend of my Dad and fell in love with it. I lived most of my life in Upcountry Maui as a Hawaiian Paniolo and was thrilled to discover the Hawaiian Pakini Bass was a standard musical instrument at all backyard Kanikapias (Jam Sessions). I have had years of musical training and am an alumni of Berklee College of Music before I began teaching music over 50 years ago. I play several musical instruments but the Pakini is by far my favorite to play. I am very excited to share my knowledge of rhe Hawaiian Pakini Bass with new players to perpetuate this part of Hawaiian Music for future generations..
I will accept individuals or groups as students. It is the most fun a person can possibly have with a stick, a string and a bucket. Pakini is also a great first instrument to use to teach youth rhythm and pitch. I will also be available to students during the week should they or the group have any questions. I look forward to perpetuating Pakini in Hawaiian Music together with you. It is the most fun musical instrument I have ever played. One day I dream to perform in Japan.
