Description

Lesson Title: The Future of Work

Student level: B1 (intermediate)

Skill Focus: Listening for gist and details

                    speaking

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:

1.       Develop their listening/comprehension skills.

2.       Provide their opinion about the future of work.

 

This lesson is composed of 3 parts:

1.       Vocabulary pre-teaching. (15 minutes)

2.       Listening / comprehension activities. (25 minutes)

3.       Speaking activities. (10 minutes)

 

Stage 1: Vocabulary pre-teaching.

Stage objectives:

·         To activate pre-existing knowledge.

·         To introduce and consolidate vocabulary items related to the listening passage. (Remote work, Artificial Intelligence …)

Procedure:

During this stage, the teacher asks relevant and suitable questions that will prompt the student to express his/her opinion, activate his/her background knowledge about the topic and consolidate the vocabulary items they already know.

During this stage, the teacher highlights and drills the vocabulary items / expressions necessary for a smooth understanding of the listening passage.

 

Stage 2: Listening / Comprehension

Stage Objectives:

·         To listen for gist then for details / to listen to answer questions.

Procedure:

During this stage, the student listens to a passage/conversation/podcast that tackles the issue of the future of work. After listening for the first time, the student answers a question about the general idea of the text. The student then listens a second and third time and answer questions about particular details in the text

 

Stage 3: Speaking / discussion

Stage Objectives:

·         To freely express opinions about the ideas mentioned in the listening passage.

Procedure:

The teacher provides the student with questions that build upon the ideas mentioned in the text. The student is free to provide his or her ideas. The student is prompted to expand on his/her ideas and speak as much as possible.

 

 

Note 1: After the lesson, the teacher provides the student with a worksheet with all the main ideas discussed during the lesson as well as any necessary homework to consolidate the newly acquired vocabulary or expressions. The teacher can also include written corrections to the students’ errors.

Note 2: Teacher talking time is minimal. The teacher’s role is to guide and prompt the student to express themselves as much as possible.
