Objective: Students will be able to ask for and give directions to common places using simple vocabulary and phrases.
Lesson Goals
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Use common direction phrases (e.g., "turn left", "go straight").
- Ask for directions using basic questions.
- Identify common places in a town or city.
Lesson Structure
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Activity: Vocabulary Brainstorm
- Ask students: “What places are in a town or city?”
- Have students repeat the words
2. Presentation (10 minutes)
Teach Key Vocabulary
- Direction words: left, right, straight, across from, next to, behind, on the corner
- Questions:
- “Where is the ___?”
- “How do I get to the ___?”
- “Can you help me?”
Example Sentences
- “Go straight and turn left.”
- “It’s next to the supermarket.”
- “The bank is across from the park.”
Tips: Use gestures and visuals (arrows, maps) to reinforce meaning.
3. Guided Practice (5 minutes)
Activity: Fill in the Map
- Give students a map with some buildings unlabeled.
- Describe a location and ask them to label it.
- Sample cues:
- “The school is next to the park.”
- “The police station is across from the bank.”
4 Wrap-Up & Review (5 minutes)
Activity: Quick Review Game
- Say a place (e.g., “Hospital”), and have a student describe how to get there using the map.
- Encourage whole-class repetition and participation.
Homework / Extension
Assignment: Draw your own simple town map and write directions to two places using vocabulary from class.
