So why does speaking your second language still not feel natural?
Many advanced learners hit this invisible ceiling. They start wondering: “Why don’t I sound native yet?” The answer is often not more grammar — it’s pragmatics.
Pragmatics is the part of language that teaches you how meaning works in real life: tone, intention, politeness, cultural nuance, what is implied rather than said. It’s the difference between being correct… and being appropriate, persuasive, warm, or natural in context.
And here’s the part we don’t talk about enough: pragmatics is rarely taught explicitly. Language classes focus heavily on structure, but learners are left to “pick up” social meaning on their own — which is incredibly hard, even at higher levels.
The good news? You don’t need to be C1 to start learning pragmatics. In fact, the earlier you become aware of it, the more confident and authentic your communication becomes.
If you’ve ever felt stuck between “technically correct” and “truly fluent”, you’re not failing — you’re simply reaching the stage where pragmatics matters most.
Language mastery isn’t just about what you say.
It’s about how, when, and why you say it.
And that’s where real fluency begins.
