Target Students: Professionals at B1-C1 levels looking to master networking and small talk at business events  

Language Focus: Colloquial phrases/expressions, idioms, general small talk

Lesson Overview:

The main aim of this lesson is to help you overcome social anxiety when using English at a business function to engage with fellow attendees. This practical lesson equips you with proven conversation openers, engagement techniques, and graceful exit strategies for business events. Through a combination of guided structural frameworks and realistic role-play scenarios, you will practise breaking the ice and using natural phrasing. You’ll receive real-time coaching, positive reinforcement, and actionable feedback so you can walk into your next professional function feeling 100% confident.


This lesson comprises three main parts:

First, you will see a slide presentation outlining the four steps (hook, bridge, exchange & exit) for using small talk effectively at business functions, such as cocktail parties and dinners. This will be followed by an interactive activity featuring useful openers (hook) and strong examples of how to connect with people at these events (bridge).

Next, I will provide you with examples of idioms and colloquial expressions used in this context, including to work the room and to talk shop. We will then review the language you will need for mastering small talk at business functions before giving you an execise on the four steps to complete.   

Finally, you will have an opportunity to practise several role plays with me. These fun and very useful activities will better prepare you for interacting confidently at any business events you attend in the future.
