Lesson #1:

This week, we're going to learn about arguments. Arguments are statements that might or might not be true. They are different from facts, which are statements that are always true.

            Facts                                                              Arguments

Snakes smell with their tongue.                              Snakes are creepy.
Green is blue mixed with yellow.                             Green is the best color.

You don't need to convince someone that a fact is true, because if they like it or not, green is always blue mixed with yellow. If it was red mixed with yellow, It would no longer be green.

If you wanted to say that orange was the best color, however, that could be false, but it could also be true! An argument is different from facts because it's something we are NOT sure is true.

A. Write an 'F' for facts and 'A' for arguments:

1. People in Japan speak Japanese.                       _______
2. Pizza tastes better than chicken.                       _______
3. Spring and Autumn are important.                    _______
4. Whales are mammals.                                      _______
5. Beetles are beautiful creatures.                         _______
6. Dogs are the best pets.                                    _______

Good Work! You may have noticed that arguments sounds a lot like opinions. You are right! Opinions and arguments are similar, but there is one BIG difference:

An opinion is NOT an argument if only YOU believe it.

Argument                             Opinion                                   Are they
                                                                                             the same?

Plants are beautiful.               Plants are beautiful.                     Yes

Cherry pie is the best pie!       I love cherry pie!                         No

We shouldn't have to go         We shouldn't have to go                Yes
to school on Fridays.              to school on Fridays.

Those shoes are stylish!         I like your shoes!                          No

Did you notice the difference? When you say "I like..." or "I think..." or "I love...", you are saying something that is absolutely true! No one can say "No you don't actually like those shoes". That would be weird! They can't decide what you like or don't like for you.

Opinions are only arguments if there is a chance they are not true. If it is something you think, love, like, hate, or prefer, then it's not an argument.

B. If the opinion is also an argument, write an 'O', if not, write an 'X'

1. My favorite color is blue.                                         ________

2. Spring is a wonderful season.                                  ________

3. I really love your bike!                                            ________

4. I prefer summer afternoons.                                    ________

5. We should watch a movie tonight.                            ________

6. Seven is a very special number.                               ________
