课程介绍

Session Title: Navigating the Currents: A Look at Contemporary Trends in Japan

Duration: 60 Minutes

Target Audience: Intermediate to Advanced English language learners (B1-C1 CEFR levels) interested in Japanese society, culture, and business.

Session Overview:
This interactive English language session explores prominent modern trends shaping Japan today. Moving beyond traditional cultural icons, we will examine the social, technological, and economic currents influencing daily life and the national conversation. The goal is to build vocabulary, practice discussion, and develop critical thinking skills through engaging, real-world topics.

Session Structure (60-Minute Blueprint)

Part 1: Introduction & Warm-up (10 minutes)

  • Activity: "Japan in One Word" brainstorming.

  • Goal: Activate prior knowledge, set context, and introduce key theme-related vocabulary (e.g., society, demographics, innovation, trend, shift).

  • Flow: Instructor elicits words from participants, creates a mind map on a digital whiteboard, and gently guides from historical/cultural terms (e.g., samurai, sushi) toward modern concepts.

Part 2: Deep Dive into Key Trends (35 minutes)
*We will explore 2-3 of the following trends, chosen based on participant interest or pre-session poll. Each trend segment follows this pattern: Vocabulary Input > Short Contextual Input > Discussion Questions.*

Trend Options:

  1. The Silver Tsunami & Its Ripples

    • Key Vocab: Aging population, demographic crisis, workforce, automation, silver economy, eldercare.

    • Context (2 mins): Japan has the world's oldest population. What are the impacts? (Shrinking workforce, vacant houses (akiya), innovation in robotics for care, new business markets for seniors).

    • Discussion Qs: What are the biggest challenges? What opportunities does this create? How is your country dealing with similar issues?

  2. Work Style Reform: From Karoshi to Telework

    • Key Vocab: Work-life balance, overwork, remote work, karoshi, productivity, corporate culture.

    • Context (2 mins): Government-led reforms, the pandemic's impact on telework, the slow change in traditional corporate culture, the rise of the "side job" or "dual job" trend.

    • Discussion Qs: Is remote work becoming the new normal in Japan? What are the barriers to true work-life balance? Compare job-seeking attitudes in Japan (shūkatsu) with those in other countries.

  3. Sustainability & The Green Shift

    • Key Vocab: Sustainability, SDGs, renewable energy, zero-waste, eco-friendly, circular economy.

    • Context (2 mins): Japan's push for carbon neutrality by 2050, growth of plastic-free stores, changes in consumer packaging, advancements in hydrogen energy and next-gen renewables.

    • Discussion Qs: How visible is the "green movement" in daily life? What is the biggest obstacle to a more sustainable Japan? Are consumers or corporations more responsible for driving change?

  4. Digital Transformation: Cashless Society & AI

    • Key Vocab: Digitalization, cashless payments, AI integration, cybersecurity, convenience, data privacy.

    • Context (2 mins): The move away from cash (despite high usage), the rise of PayPay, LINE Pay, and other services. The cautious but growing adoption of AI in business and public services.

    • Discussion Qs: Why was Japan a cash-based society for so long? What are the pros and cons of a fully cashless society? Are people in Japan more or less trusting of AI than in other countries?

Part 3: Synthesis & Critical Thinking (10 minutes)

  • Activity: "Trend Connector" or mini-debate.

    • Option A (Connector): "How does the aging population (Trend 1) drive innovation in robotics and AI (Trend 4)?" Participants draw connections between the discussed trends.

    • Option B (Debate): "This house believes that the traditional Japanese office culture will disappear within 20 years." Brief for/against discussion.

  • Goal: Encourage higher-order thinking, use new vocabulary in argumentation, and synthesize ideas.

Part 4: Wrap-up & Takeaways (5 minutes)

  • Summary: Quick recap of trends and key vocabulary.

  • Feedback: "What was the most surprising trend we discussed today?"

  • Resource Sharing: Provide a short, curated list of English-language sources for further exploration (e.g., Japan TimesNHK WorldNippon.com).

Sourcing Materials & Resources

  • For Context/Data: Use English-language articles from reputable sources like NHK World JapanThe Japan TimesNippon.com, or Reuters Japan. These provide accurate, level-appropriate reading material.

  • For Visuals/Engagement: Short video clips (2-3 mins) from NHK World's "Newsroom Tokyo" or BBC's "Our World" (Japan episodes) are excellent for introducing topics.

  • For Vocabulary & Discussion: Create simple infographics or slides with key statistics (e.g., population pyramids, cashless payment adoption graphs) to serve as visual conversation starters.

Delivery Style: The session should be facilitator-led but participant-centered, prioritizing discussion over lecture. The instructor's role is to provide clear context, manage vocabulary, and stimulate conversation, allowing learners to practice expressing complex ideas in English.
