Halloween Traditions Around the World

Weekly Topic: Halloween traditions around the world

Michael H

When I was a kid I loved going Trick-or-Treating. I can still remember the smell of the Halloween candy in my bag! Actually I used to use a pillowcase. And, if I'm being honest, I probably went Trick-or-Treating longer than I should have, meaning I was probably too old for it and I should've stopped before I was in high school. But, like I said, I loved it! My favorite part was getting home and everyone would dump out their bags and inspect their loot. There was always the candy you were excited about and there was always the candy that you were not excited about. The candy that made you wonder who actually buys this stuff. And then when you were done going through your candy you would trade with your siblings and friends. That was my favorite part.
My other favorite Halloween tradition was the Halloween parade at my elementary school. Everyone would dress up in their costumes at the school and then we would go outside, line up and parade around the parking lot. The teachers would lead us and the parents would come and take pictures. When I was very young my mother would buy us the cheap costumes from the drug store. The kind with the plastic mask with the elastic band that would go around the back of your head, and the vinyl one-piece suit that you would wear over your school clothes. I wore so many of those, from Star Wars to E.T. to one year when I went as Count Chocula, the mascot from the Monster Cereals!
Great memories!
