Learning Japanese with the Omokaru Stone

Sasya

At Sumiyoshi Taisha, there is a mysterious stone called the "Omokaru Stone." You lift a heavy stone and use how it feels to tell whether your wish will come true.

"Omokaru" is "omoi" (heavy) + "karui" (light). Two words with opposite meanings have become one. Look closely at the form of these i-adjectives. The final "i" of "omoi" and "karui" disappears, and "omo" and "karu" are joined together.

The instructions are written on a signboard. First, bow twice, clap twice, and bow once more. This is called "nihai nihakushu ippai." Next, lift the stone and remember its weight. Then place your hand on the stone and pray. Lift it again and compare the weight.

If it feels light, it means "kanau" (your wish will come true). If it feels heavy, it means "doryoku o shimashou" (let's make an effort). "Kanau" means a wish becomes reality, and "doryoku" means to work hard.

The signboard also says "yubi ni chui" (watch your fingers). When you lift the stone, be careful not to pinch your fingers.

Do you want to try the Omokaru Stone?
