「ちょっと」って、どれくらい? ~べんりで ふしぎな にほんご~

Sasya

How Much Is “Chotto”? ~A Handy and Mysterious Japanese Word~

Hello, I’m SASYA, your Japanese teacher.

Last time, I talked about the meaning of “nanka.” This time, let’s look at another handy word that Japanese people use all the time: “chotto.”

① Meaning “a little”
“Chotto matte kudasai” (Please wait a moment.) “Chotto tabete mite” (Try a little bit.)
This is the simple meaning: “a little.”

② Meaning “no” (a polite refusal)
“Do you want to go for a drink this Saturday?”
“Ah, Saturday is… chotto…”
Here, “chotto” is a gentle way to say “I can’t.” The words after “chotto” are left unsaid, but the feeling gets across. Not saying a clear “No” is both the kindness and the difficulty of Japanese.

③ Meaning “Excuse me” (getting attention)
“Chotto, sumimasen” / “Chotto, ii?” (Excuse me / Got a minute?)
You can also use it to call a waiter or to start talking to someone.

④ Meaning “quite a lot”
Someone might say “This ramen is chotto spicy,” but it’s actually “very spicy!” Even when people say “chotto,” sometimes they really mean “quite a lot.”

What about Osaka?
In Osaka, where I live, “chotto” doesn’t always stay “chotto.” “Chotto matte” (“Wait a moment”) becomes “chotto matte ya” or “chotto mattotte.” Among close friends, people even say “choi machi!”

Summary
“Chotto” can be used in many situations: amount, requests, refusals, and calling out to someone. Its meaning changes depending on tone of voice, facial expression, and the conversation around it.

Have you ever been surprised by “chotto”? In my lessons, let’s practice how to use it together. I look forward to meeting you.
