Have you ever heard Japanese people say things like “~chatta”?
Japanese people use this expression ALL the time!
Originally, it comes from the grammar form “~te shimaimasu” that you learn in textbooks,
but when speaking casually, it changes to “~chatta.”
While “~te shimaimasu” has a few different meanings, we most commonly use it to express a feeling of regret, or an "Oh no!" / "Oops!" moment.
For example:
- Saifu wo otoshita ➡ Otoshi chatta! (Oh no, I dropped my wallet!)
- Keitai ga kowareta ➡ Koware chatta... (My phone broke...)
By the way... Depending on the verb, it can sometimes change to “~jatta” instead, like:
- Non jatta (I drank it / I accidentally drank it)
In my lessons, you can learn the super easy rules for making the “~chatta / ~jatta” forms and practice a lot using a list of verbs we use every day!
