A few days ago, I had the chance to stroll around Kamakura with an Italian friend who was traveling in Japan. For coordinating where to meet and adjusting our plans, I tried using the translation GPT I mentioned in my recent column—the one that even takes Italian grammatical gender and number into account—and it was incredibly convenient!

Even while sightseeing, it handled things like explaining detailed Japanese menu items, customs and etiquette, and transportation situations with exactly the nuance I wanted. That made me feel that, for natural conversation, generative AI is better suited than ordinary translation software.

I originally created this gender- and number-aware translation GPT because Italian requires grammatical agreement in gender and number. But not all of my friends are Italian, and Italian is far from the only language where wording changes depending on gender, number, or the relationship with the other person.

So I started thinking, “Why not try making a GPT that can handle a variety of languages?” and began building one that supports multilingual translation and language learning. While I was still working on it, I asked a Malaysian friend to check the English, Chinese, and Malay, and they told me, “This actually looks pretty good.” That made me think it might also be useful for foreign visitors coming to Japan, so I decided to add features for travelers as well.

I originally made it for myself, so I may still keep tweaking and refining it...
But if it sounds useful, I hope you’ll give it a try.
As long as you log in to ChatGPT, anyone who knows the URL can use it for free.

So, what kind of GPT is it?

In short, this GPT is:

A multilingual translation assistant that helps you use and learn natural foreign-language expressions based on Japanese.

Rather than simply replacing words one by one, it tries to shape the translation into something that sounds natural in the target language, while also helping users learn vocabulary and grammar when needed.

One of its especially distinctive features is that it can reflect grammatical information that is important in certain languages.

For example, depending on the language, expressions may change based on things such as:
・whether the speaker is male or female
・whether the speaker is singular or plural
・whether the listener is one person or multiple people
・the degree of familiarity with the listener
・the level of politeness

These kinds of details are not always explicit in Japanese, but in other languages they can be essential for producing natural wording.
For languages where these distinctions matter, this GPT is designed to take them into account as much as possible.

Main features

1. Easy to use for translating from Japanese into foreign languages
At its core, this GPT is meant to support Japanese speakers learning foreign languages.
You simply type what you want to say in Japanese, and it turns it into a natural, practical expression in the target language.

2. Can reflect gender, number, politeness, and more when needed
For languages like Italian and French, where agreement in gender and number is important, it translates with those points in mind.
Depending on the language, it can also take into account differences in honorifics and phrasing based on the relationship between speakers.

3. Can include learning support
In addition to translation, you can also check:

・grammar explanations

So it is useful not only when you “just want the translation,” but also when you want to understand why the expression is phrased that way.

There are three modes

This GPT basically has three ways to use it.

1) Translation Mode
This is for when you simply want a natural translation.

For example, it is useful when you want to:
・send a message
・use natural expressions in chat
・get the translation first and keep things simple

Instead of starting with a long explanation, it first gives you a natural translation, and then lets you see extra details only if you want them.

2) Language Learning Mode
This mode is for people who want to study more deeply.

In addition to the translation, it shows:
・a vocabulary list
・an idiom / phrase list
・grammar explanations

from the beginning, so it is suited to people who want more than “just a translation.”
For English, you can choose a level using TOEIC or CEFR, and for other languages it tries to reflect whatever learning standards are commonly used.

3) Foreign Traveler Mode
This mode is designed for foreign visitors traveling in Japan.

When you send Japanese text or an image containing Japanese, it organizes the output in the following order:
・Romaji Reading
・Translation
・Vocabulary List
・Grammar Notes

When you are traveling, what matters most is understanding the meaning quickly, rather than studying grammar in detail.
So in this mode, practicality comes first, and everything is designed to be as clear and easy to use as possible.

Qualche giorno fa, ho avuto l’occasione di passeggiare per Kamakura con un mio amico italiano che era in viaggio in Giappone. Per organizzarci sul punto d’incontro e per coordinarci sugli orari e sul programma, ho provato a usare il GPT di traduzione di cui avevo parlato anche in una rubrica recente, quello che tiene conto perfino delle differenze di genere e numero in italiano, ed è stato comodissimo!

Anche durante la visita turistica, riusciva a rendere esattamente le sfumature che volevo trasmettere: per esempio quando spiegavo in dettaglio i piatti del menu giapponese, le usanze e le regole di comportamento, oppure la situazione dei trasporti. Per questo penso che, per le conversazioni naturali, l’IA generativa sia più adatta dei normali software di traduzione.

Avevo creato questo GPT di traduzione sensibile a genere e numero proprio perché in italiano è necessario far concordare questi elementi grammaticali. Però i miei amici non sono solo italiani, e inoltre l’italiano non è affatto l’unica lingua in cui il modo di esprimersi cambia a seconda del genere, del numero o del rapporto con l’interlocutore.

Così ho pensato: “Allora potrei provare a creare anche un GPT capace di gestire varie lingue”. Ho quindi iniziato a sviluppare uno strumento multilingue per la traduzione e il supporto allo studio delle lingue. Mentre lo stavo ancora creando, ho chiesto a un’amica malese di controllare l’inglese, il cinese e il malese, e mi ha detto che “sembra davvero promettente”. A quel punto mi è venuto in mente che potrebbe essere utile anche agli stranieri che vengono in Giappone, quindi ho aggiunto anche alcune funzioni pensate per i viaggiatori stranieri.

In origine l’ho creato soprattutto per me stessa, quindi probabilmente continuerò ancora a correggerlo e migliorarlo...

Che tipo di GPT è?

In poche parole, questo GPT è:

un assistente di traduzione multilingue che ti aiuta a usare e imparare espressioni straniere naturali partendo dal giapponese.

Non si limita a sostituire le parole una per una, ma cerca di trasformare il testo in un’espressione il più possibile naturale nella lingua di arrivo, permettendo allo stesso tempo di imparare vocabolario e grammatica quando serve.

Una delle sue caratteristiche più particolari è che può riflettere le informazioni grammaticali necessarie in certe lingue.

Per esempio, a seconda della lingua, le espressioni possono cambiare in base a fattori come:
・se chi parla è uomo o donna
・se il soggetto è singolare o plurale
・se l’interlocutore è una sola persona o più persone
・il grado di familiarità con l’interlocutore

Caratteristiche principali

1. Facile da usare per tradurre dal giapponese alle lingue straniere
La funzione di base è offrire supporto ai giapponesi che studiano lingue straniere.
Inserisci in giapponese ciò che vuoi dire e il sistema lo trasforma in un’espressione naturale e facile da usare nella lingua scelta.

2. Tiene conto, quando necessario, di genere, numero, formalità e altro
Per lingue come l’italiano o il francese, in cui la concordanza di genere e numero è importante, traduce tenendo presenti questi aspetti.
Inoltre, a seconda della lingua, può considerare anche differenze di registro, formule di cortesia e modi di dire legati al rapporto tra i parlanti.

3. Può includere supporti per l’apprendimento
Oltre alla traduzione, è possibile consultare anche:
・liste di vocaboli
・liste di espressioni / modi di dire
・spiegazioni grammaticali

Quindi è utile non solo quando “si vuole semplicemente la traduzione”, ma anche quando si vuole capire perché una frase viene espressa in quel modo.

L’obiettivo principale di questo GPT è aiutare i giapponesi nello studio delle lingue straniere, ma ho aggiunto anche una modalità di supporto per i viaggiatori stranieri.

Può leggere testi e indicazioni in giapponese e mostrare:

・semplici note grammaticali

Ci sono tre modalità

Questo GPT ha fondamentalmente tre modi di utilizzo.

1) Modalità traduzione
È la modalità adatta quando si vuole semplicemente ottenere una traduzione naturale.

Per esempio, è utile quando vuoi:
・inviare un messaggio
・usare espressioni naturali in chat
・ottenere prima di tutto la traduzione, senza troppe spiegazioni iniziali

Invece di partire con spiegazioni lunghe, fornisce prima una traduzione naturale e, solo se necessario, permette di vedere ulteriori approfondimenti.

2) Modalità studio delle lingue
Questa è la modalità pensata per chi vuole imparare in modo più approfondito.

Oltre alla traduzione, mostra fin dall’inizio:
・una lista di vocaboli
・una lista di espressioni / modi di dire
・spiegazioni grammaticali

Per questo è adatta a chi non vuole fermarsi alla sola traduzione, ma desidera capire bene il contenuto.
Per l’inglese si può scegliere il livello in base al TOEIC o al CEFR, e per le altre lingue si cerca di riflettere, quando possibile, i criteri di livello più usati.

3) Foreign Traveler Mode
Questa modalità è pensata per gli stranieri che viaggiano in Giappone.

Quando si invia un testo giapponese o un’immagine che contiene giapponese, il risultato viene organizzato nel seguente ordine:
