In October I had the chance to travel to Angers to watch the Grand Prix de France 2025. The competition was fascinating, and the skaters presented their programs for the Olympic season. I was very lucky to meet three-time World Champion Kaori Sakamoto. Kaori is very kind and friendly, and it was a wonderful opportunity for me to practise some Japanese.
At the same time, I realized that I could improve my knowledge of Japanese figure skating terms. I am always curious about how to say different figure skating words in Japanese.
If, like me, you enjoy watching figure skating and want to know the correct terms to use in English, below is a list of some basic figure skating vocabulary with their Japanese translation.
フィギュアスケート - figure skating
スケーター - skater
アイスリンク - ice rink
演技 - performance
大会 - competition
ショートプログラム - short program
フリープログラム - free program
ジャンプ - jump
ジャンプで転倒する - to fall from a jump
スピン - spin
得点 - score
優勝者 - winner
金メダリスト - gold medalist
