Asian Food in Africa

Therese DB

When I first started watching Asian dramas on TV, I was slowly introduced to Asian food. I had never heard of some of the dishes before. The characters in the Korean dramas ate kimpap, mandu, bibimpap and kimchi and the actors in Japanese dramas ate sushi, ramen, udon, soba and miso soup. I slowly learned how these food items were made. I was fascinated and I suggested to my family that we try some of these. My daughter was quite enthusiastic and agreed.

I had only eaten sushi in the past, and I sourced a place using the trusty internet. I managed to find an Asian supermarket, specializing in Asian products only, nearby my home and went there not knowing what to expect. To my surprise and delight, I found egg noodles, soba, udon, mandu and all kinds of Asian sauces and snacks. Of course I bought many items.

Again, the internet helped with the cooking methods and serving suggestions for the dishes that we chose.  We enjoyed everything we bought and have been going to the Asian supermarket regularly.

When we found out that there was going to be a Korean Festival as well as a Japanese festival in our city, Cape Town, we went of course and found the tastiest Asian food. We were so happy as everything was delicious!
