Photo: winter weather in Toronto
It’s noon in Toronto and I’m sipping tea and looking out the window. Everything is white. The wind is blowing so much snow around that I can barely see the high-rise buildings across the street. It’s a whiteout.
It’s -8°C right now, but the wind is strong and cold. With the wind chill it feels like -18°C. Tonight it will feel like -23°C. A cold front is moving across Canada, causing temperatures to drop. I can’t complain, though, because in Saskatoon (where my friends live in Western Canada) it feels like -46°C right now. Their city is so frigid that they need to use a block heater (an electrical device installed in a vehicle's engine to warm the coolant and oil) to keep their car working.
The bitter cold that we’re experiencing now is the result of a polar vortex, and many people throughout the United States are also experiencing harsh winter conditions and extreme temperatures. Many flights have already been cancelled and some areas have declared a state of emerency.
Unfortunately, I need to go out later today, so I’d better bundle up!
