'A silent voice' echoed through my life

Weekly Topic: What movie or book influenced you the most in your life?

Allen A.

One of the movies that has deeply influenced me is A Silent Voice. It is an anime film about school life, bullying, friendship, depression, and learning how to love again. I say “love again” because the story follows the main character’s journey toward accepting himself and forgiving both others and his own past mistakes. In many ways, I found myself relating to his struggles and growth.

As a teacher, the movie gave me a powerful realization about the long-term impact of bullying. It clearly shows what bullying can lead to, who it affects, and how deeply it can shape a student’s life. What stood out to me most was that the film didn’t only focus on the victim—it also showed the emotional side of the bully, which is something many people tend to overlook.

As an educator, watching this movie pushed me to be more open and empathetic toward what my students might be going through. I sometimes see both bullies and bullied students in my own classroom. Before, once I identified who was who, I rarely tried to understand the bully’s side of the story. But A Silent Voice taught me to be more patient, to go the extra mile in understanding both perspectives, and to become someone my students can trust—someone they can lean on and feel safe asking for help.
