The Book That Changed My Perspective: Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window" by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi

주간 토픽: What movie or book influenced you the most in your life?

Kay M

How This Book Helped Me as an ESL Teacher:

It Taught Me to Listen, Truly Listen: The book's famous scene is Headmaster Kobayashi spending four hours simply listening to little Totto-chan chatter. He didn't interrupt, correct, or get impatient. This showed me that before a student can learn from you, they must feel heard and safe. Now, I always begin my classes with a few minutes of free talk, where I listen with genuine interest. This builds incredible trust.                                                                                           It Reminded Me that Every Student is a "Totto-chan": Every student comes to my class with their own unique story, learning style, and "spark." Some are energetic, some are shy, some learn in unconventional ways. Because of this book, I strive to be a "Headmaster Kobayashi" for my students—to see their unique potential, not just their errors in pronunciation or grammar.
My goal is not just to teach English, but to create a classroom where your child feels confident, listened to, and excited to learn."

We learn English not through rote memorization under pressure, but through curiosity, conversation, and encouragement—much like the students at Tomoe Gakuen.

So, if you are looking for a teacher who values your child's unique voice and believes learning should be a joyful journey of discovery, you have come to the right place. Let's build confidence in English, together. All ages are welcome
