Tad Papa

This is a haiku composed for the New Year by Kobayashi Issa, one of the most famous haiku poets in Japan.

Do you know what it means?
Even many Japanese people today might not fully understand it.

In modern Japanese, it would sound something like this:

“Even though the year has begun anew,
it’s not as if the foolishness I had last year has been fixed.
In the end, I’ve simply returned to the same foolish self again.”

Language changes along with the times, doesn’t it?
