Recognising homonyms (words that sound alike but have different meanings) is key to finding the correct answers in the TOEIC Listening test.
Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and may have different spellings.
For example:
‘Ate’ (past tense of eat) and ‘Eight’ (the word version of the number 8).
Homographs are words that have the same spelling but have different meanings and may be pronounced differently.
For example:
‘Lead’ (to direct or guide) and ‘Lead’ (a type of metal, an alternative to steel or iron’).
A good tip for the tests is to practise recognising these words from the context of the audio.
