The Best Holiday Book

Weekly Topic: Best book you read this year!

Ann K

During the Christmas Season, one of the best books to read (or re-read) is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.  The reader of this classic tale is magically immersed in the sights and sounds of Victorian London at Christmastime.  Although the tale is well-known to everyone in the English speaking world, people read or re-read the book year after year.  Why?  Simply because the story is irresistible.  It is a timeless tale of a bitter old man, Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge, whose life is transformed when he is "haunted" by three ghosts who show him the meaning of Christmas.

In the English-speaking world, theater productions of A Christmas Carol in November and December are extremely popular.  The tale is usually enhanced by Victorian costumes and traditional songs (Christmas Carols).  By the end of the show, everyone is in the holiday spirit. In many families, seeing A Christmas Carol together is a holiday tradition.
