How to Say What You Really Think -- Politely!

Suja

Understanding the phrase , "Dare I say" and when to use it:

The phrase “Dare I say” is a polite or slightly humorous way of expressing an opinion that might be bold, surprising, or a little controversial.

It’s often used to soften what you’re about to say — like saying

“I might be wrong, but…” or

“This may sound bold, but…”

Meaning:

“Dare I say” = Am I brave enough to say this?
It suggests you’re aware your opinion might not be popular or expected.

Let’s look at HOW you use it:-

  • Usually used before your opinion:

Dare I say, + [your opinion]"

  • Or inserted mid-sentence:

" It’s, dare I say, one of the best cafés in town."

Next , let's look at some Everyday Examples

1) At Work

  • Dare I say, this project looks better than our last one!
→ You’re slightly boasting, but politely
2) In conversation when talking about food:
  • Dare I say, her homemade pizza is better than any restaurant’s.
    → You’re admitting a bold opinion.
3)In a relationship:
  • Dare I say, we make a great team!
    → Playfully confident statement.
4) When criticizing:
  • Dare I say, the movie was a bit boring.
    → You’re softening your criticism.
5) In class :
  • Dare I say, grammar practice can actually be fun.
→ You know others might disagree, so you say it with humor.

Finally, let’s examine similar expressions:

  • “If I may say so…” (more formal/polite)
  • “I have to admit…” (more personal)
  • “It might sound bold, but…” (more direct)

Go ahead and try it :)  Send me your sentence to check or book a class to practice expressing opinions naturally and confidently in conversation!
