Learning to play a music instrument requires a lot of different skills. Some skills are more easy to learn than others. But, music theory is one skill that is sometimes not given as much attention. Some people might even say it is unnecessary. However, I want to point out five benefits of learning music theory.
Firstly, what is music theory? It is all about understanding written music. It gives music students, musicians and composers a language to communicate in. So, in a way, it is the language of music.
From my own experience, here are five benefits that you can get when learning music theory:
1) It gives you a deeper understanding of why music sounds sad or happy or any other mood.
2) It improves sight-reading: helping you to read music faster and accurately.
3) It helps you in learning new sheet music and can speed up the learning process.
4) You are able to understand musical symbols and perform the music as it was intended by the composer.
5) Better performance of the music, because you understand how the composer constructed the music.
Here is the bonus benefit: you can communicate with other musicians by speaking the same language.
I encourage anyone that is learning a music instrument, to also study the ''music language'' and enjoy the benefits that comes with learning music theory.
