A 5-Minute English Practice That Makes a Big Difference

Refilwe M

Many of my students often tell me they struggle to find time to practice English outside of lessons. I always remind them that even five minutes a day can make a big difference if used wisely. In my lessons, I often introduce a simple but effective technique called the “Listen–Repeat–Record” method. I encourage students to choose a short audio clip perhaps from a podcast, a YouTube video, or one of our listening exercises and focus on how the speaker pronounces words, uses tone, and expresses emotion. Then, they repeat the sentences line by line, trying to match the rhythm and pronunciation as closely as possible. Finally, they record themselves and listen back, comparing their version to the original. My students find this method both fun and motivating because it helps improve listening, pronunciation, and speaking fluency all in just five minutes. I love seeing their confidence grow, and many are amazed when they listen to their old recordings and realize just how far they’ve come.

Tip:Keep your recordings! Listening to your old ones after a few weeks will show how much you’ve improved and that’s always motivating.
