Today 24 September is Heritage Day
in South Africa, a very special holiday for us. It’s a day where we pause to celebrate our roots, our traditions, and the diverse cultures that make up our beautiful “rainbow nation.”
Heritage Day is about honoring where we come from, but also about sharing those traditions with others. Some people dress in traditional clothing, others cook family recipes passed down through generations, and many gather with loved ones to enjoy a good braai (our South African barbecue).
For me, Heritage Day is a reminder of identity and belonging. It’s about remembering the stories of our ancestors, appreciating the beauty of our different languages and customs, and recognizing that diversity is what makes South Africa so unique.
As a teacher, I find that days like these are also a chance to learn from one another. Just as I would like to share my culture with my students, I also enjoy discovering the traditions and celebrations that are meaningful to them.
So, today I celebrate not only my own heritage but also the richness of cultural exchange. Heritage is something we all carry, it connects us to the past and guides us into the future.
Happy Heritage Day from South Africa!
