Pride and Prejudice

EmilyGL

The book in the photo is a version of one of the most famous stories in English, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. This was first published in 1813 and has become a real classic. You may have seen a movie of the story - there are several.

At a dance, the heroine Elizabeth Bennett meets a rich proud man who is visiting, called Mr Darcy. She decides that he is too proud to be pleasant. Mr Darcy does not seem a warm man and is not easy to get on with. Mr Wickham however seems a marvellous man. But during the course of the novel Elizabeth and Mr Darcy both change their ideas about each other and lose their prejudices.

Part of the interest of the story comes from Elizabeth's mother and father and her four sisters. Elizabeth's mother Mrs Bennettt is desperate to see all her daughters safely married and made secure in life. The youngest daughter, Lydia, does a very foolish thing, and runs away with Wickham who does not mean to marry her! This would be a disaster for her and her family. Sorting out this problem brings Mr Darcy and Elizabeth closer together.

In this lesson, I am using the Penguin graded reader which has the story specially adapted to help learners of English. It is recommended to buy this book online or in a shop.

You can either read the book by yourself and ask me questions about it in the lesson. Or we will read the story aloud in the lesson and talk about it.
After the lesson I will send you feedback and links to further information and places in the book.
This lesson is for adult students, and would suit intermediate students who would like a gentle introduction to the classics, or advanced level students for fun.
I look forward to reading it with you.
