Quick tips: I’m going to… vs. I’m in a… (pronunciation)

Zach McLaughlin

I was watching a video recently in which two men were demonstrating a game and announcing what they were going to do each turn. As they repeated “I’m going to…” over and over, I realized just how confusing it must sound to someone learning English.

Why? Because when American English speakers talk quickly and naturally, “I’m going to…” sounds like “I’mna…,” so a sentence like “I’m going to shoot” sounds almost identical to “I’m in a chute” (which obviously has a totally different meaning!).

Most English learners know that “I’m gonna…” is a common way to pronounce “I’m going to…,” but in reality there is another level - “I’mna…” You don’t need to say it this way - in fact, it might be a bit difficult to pronounce this - but it’s good to know that when you hear something like “I’mna go,” the speaker is actually saying “I’m going to go.”
