Pool Parties in New England

Ann K

In New England, summer is short.  Typically, we swim only from June to early September.  That's why we make the most of every moment of warm weather.  One of our favorite ways to enjoy the dog days of summer is to attend or host a pool party.  Typically, guests arrive in the late morning and depart in the late afternoon or early evening.  Everyone brings snacks and lunch is generally pot luck.  Throughout the day, guests alternate swimming and poolside socializing. While swimming, children often play games like pool tag while adults often play cards or chat.  When the mercury rises, there is no more pleasant way to spend the day!

Vocabulary:  make the most of - gain the greatest benefit from; dog days - hot days of summer; pot luck - a meal where everyone brings a different dish; poolside - near the pool; when the mercury rises - when the temperatures get hot
