Weekly Topic: The Best Place to Visit During a Long Vacation

Teacher Vera

Hi everyone!

Isn't it amazing how certain places stay with you long after you've packed your suitcase and gone home? Whether it's the view from a quiet beach, the energy of a new city, or the taste of a dish you've never tried before—some trips just become part of you.

Over the years, I've been lucky enough to visit some incredible places across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States—18 countries in total! Each destination brought something new into my life, but a few of them really stand out—either because they were so relaxing, so exciting, or so unexpected.

And apparently, I have a habit of ending up near water!
Let me take you on a quick journey through three vacations I'll never forget.

Chilling in Cyprus—My "Do-Nothing-and-Love-It" Vacation

Last summer, I went to Ayia Napa, a sunny beach town in Cyprus—and it was paradise. I spent my days doing all the things you dream of on vacation:

  • Swimming with turtles
  • Parasailing over the coastline
  • Visiting an underwater museum (yes, it was real!)
  • Eating delicious food
  • And just... relaxing

If I wasn't exploring the beach, I was stretched out on a lounge chair with a cold drink in hand, watching the waves.

The only downside? It was pretty touristy—but honestly, I was too busy enjoying the warm sun and the sound of the sea to care much.
Cyprus gave me the break I didn't know I needed.

A Trip Through Time in Washington, D.C.

A very different trip—but just as unforgettable—was my visit to Washington, D.C.

Instead of beaches, I explored American history. I walked between towering monuments and famous buildings like:

  • The US Capitol
  • The Lincoln Memorial
  • The Washington Monument
  • And yes, I even saw the White House up close!

I spent hours in museums, learning about American politics, culture, and the lives of the country's founding fathers. If you're someone who likes to travel and learn, this city is a dream. It was my favorite educational vacation.

Hiking to Hidden Waterfalls in Greece

Now, let's talk about Kalamata—a gem in southern Greece. Of course, I made time for the beach (I told you I had a pattern!). But the highlight of this trip was a spontaneous hike through a quiet forest that led to a gorgeous hidden waterfall.

No crowds, no noise—just trees, fresh air, and the sound of water echoing through the valley.

It reminded me that sometimes the best part of a vacation is when things don't go exactly as planned.

What Makes a Vacation Great?

After all these trips, I've learned that the "perfect" long vacation doesn't have to be far or fancy.
What matters most is:

  • How it makes you feel
  • What you experience
  • And what you take home with you (besides souvenirs!)

Some of my best memories came from simple moments—floating in the sea, laughing with friends over dinner, or seeing something new for the first time.

Want to Travel Without Leaving Home?

If you love learning about the world and other cultures, I'd love to invite you to my class: Cultural Passport.

In this lesson, we "travel" to a new country each time through fun conversation, local facts, foods, traditions, geography, and more—all while practicing English. It's perfect for curious learners who want to connect language and culture in a relaxed, friendly setting.

It's like a vacation for your brain—with no plane ticket needed ;)

Let's Talk about Your Travels!

Now it's your turn—
What's the best place you've visited? What made it so special? Let's talk about it in class, and maybe I can help you plan your next dream trip in English.
