Hot Topic in My City in the United States: School Funding Freeze Hurts ELL Students

Hello CafeTalk family!

Here in my hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana, there’s been a lot of concern lately about frozen federal school funding and how it’s hurting English Language Learners (ELLs).

I work as a substitute teacher for Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS), and many of the students I teach are newcomers to the U.S. learning English. I also volunteer with refugee children, helping them adjust to life in a new country and build confidence in English. So when I heard that nearly $4.5 million in federal funding had been frozen — just weeks before school starts a new school year— it felt personal.

That funding supports ELL programs, adult education, teacher training, STEAM classes, and more. According to our superintendent, it affects over 4,400 English-learning students and more than 200 adult learners in our district. It’s heartbreaking to think that the students who need the most support might start the school year with fewer resources.

As an English tutor, I’m passionate about creating a safe, welcoming space for learners of all backgrounds. Whether you’re in the U.S. or another part of the world, I’m here to support your English journey — no matter what politics are doing behind the scenes.

Let’s keep learning, growing, and encouraging one another! ??
