The rainy season is here—wet shoes, cloudy skies, and more time spent indoors. Some people love the rainy days... and some feel a little sleepy and bored. But don't worry—rainy days can be the perfect chance for you to play, relax, and enjoy English in fun and gentle ways.
Here are 5+ creative ideas to enjoy the rainy season and build your confidence in English—alone, with your family, or during our lessons!
1. Read a Book in English
Rainy weather is made for reading! Choose a light novel, short story, or even a graded reader suited to your level. Even a few minutes a day can help your brain stay connected to English.
Bonus tip: Keep a small "rainy day vocabulary" notebook to write down new words you discover.
2. Cook with English Recipes
Stay dry in the kitchen and try making something new! Find an English recipe for soup, snacks, or your favorite food and follow along. You'll learn verbs like chop, stir, boil, and mix—plus you get a delicious reward in the end.
3. Movie Night with Subtitles
Choose an English movie or TV show and turn on the subtitles (in English, if possible!). Pause and repeat fun expression. Listen for the tone, rhythm, and humor in conversations.
Some student favorites: Paddington, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Parent Trap, and Mary Poppins.
4. Slow Down: Journal and Reflect
Rain slows us down. That's a good thing. Try journaling a few sentences a day in English:
- "Today it rained and I..."
- "The sound of the rain made me feel..."
5. Join an Online English Conversation
Not sure what to do indoors? Let's talk! I offer friendly, flexible conversation classes for all levels—especially for students who want to keep their English fresh and alive. We can talk about:
- Favorite foods and hobbies
- Books
- How you can spend your time indoors
Bonus Ideas (just for fun)
- Make an English playlist and relax with music
- Practice describing the weather or your home surroundings in English
- Learn new words by looking outside your window
Rainy days can feel slow and even a little lonely— but they can also be peaceful, creative, and full of small joys.
What's your favorite thing to do during the rainy season? I'd love to hear about it in class!
Stay cozy & curious,
