Hello everyone! ¡Hola a todos! 皆んなさん、こんにちは!
My name is Martin, and I'm so happy to be able to teach here on Cafetalk!
First, a little bit about my background…
I'm a teacher by profession and a language-learning enthusiast. I was born in Chile but spent my childhood in Canada, where English became my first language. Eventually, my family moved back to Chile, where I began learning Spanish from scratch. Apart from English and Spanish, I have been studying Japanese for six years and can speak a little. I’ve also been lucky enough to travel to Japan twice!
I have worked for over nine years giving private English classes in both in-person and online settings. Before that, I worked for eight years in a classroom setting, teaching music and arts to junior high-school students.
I would describe my teaching style as student-centered, friendly, and at the same time thorough and conscientious. I plan lessons to suit each student’s level, goals, learning pace, as well as their interests and motivations. I believe the main purpose of a language is to communicate, so I aim to make communication an interesting and enjoyable activity for each of you. And as someone who enjoys languages, I hope my students can share in that feeling too!
In my lessons, we can work with an integrated skills approach, focusing on speaking, reading, listening, and writing, following a structured progression of content, or we can focus just on conversation. Regardless of the approach, a key aspect of my lessons is that they’re dynamic, with a strong focus on practice, and flexible in adapting to the circumstances of a class and a student’s needs and preferences.
Since my lessons emphasize practice, even in classes with an integrated skills approach, we will place importance on conversation from the beginning. I will be happy to use my Japanese when it can be useful to facilitate comprehension, especially for beginner levels.
I look forward to meeting you and learning about your goals, preferences, and expectations.
Hope to see you soon!
Martin
