To give you the best learning experience possible, I kindly ask that you request lessons using the Zoom platform.

There are two main reasons for this:

  1. Extended Lesson Time: I subscribe to Zoom’s paid version, which allows us to go beyond the 40-minute time limit of the free plan—no interruptions, no cutoffs, just smooth and uninterrupted learning.

  2. AI-Powered Note Taking: Zoom allows me to use an AI note-taking tool, which means I can focus entirely on teaching during our lesson. No multitasking, no distractions—just personalized attention for you, followed by clear, detailed lesson summaries and feedback.

 Hello! I'm Manning, from Boston, Massachusetts. I lived and worked in Japan for 10 years. Students tell me I'm a good listener, relaxed, helpful, and have a good sense of humor.  Be careful, I might make you laugh!  I love learning about different cultures, accents, and dialects like Hokkaido-ben. I love sports, and I watch ice hockey, baseball, American Football, and rugby.  I also love music, especially the Beatles, and sang in a Beatles cover band while living in Japan.


Teaching Experience
My teaching experience includes:
  • Guest Lecturing at Merrimack College, North Andover, Massachusetts
  • Teaching EFL, Business English, and TOEFL/TOEIC test prep at a private language school in Tokyo to high school graduates, housewives, businessmen, and women from companies like Fuji Film, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, and Seiko Instruments
  • Working as an Assistant English Teacher in Tokyo, teaching sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in four junior high schools
  • Teaching High School English Literature and composition in the US at a small private boarding school
Business Career
I joined a multinational publishing company in Tokyo as an educational consultant and traveled throughout Japan and Asia, visiting international schools, colleges, and universities. I gave conference teaching seminars, wrote a learner's dictionary workbook, and sold ESL/EFL and subject-matter textbooks for kindergarten through university-level students. 
 
The publishing company moved my family and me to Boston. Since then, I've done sales and marketing at an Educational Technology start-up and a high-tech semiconductor company. I learned search engine optimization, search engine marketing, paid advertising, and demand generation. I shared Search Engine Marketing (SEO and Paid Search Advertising), Lead Generation, and Content Marketing with my colleagues.  Mixing my teaching expertise with practical marketing strategies, I helped business units succeed in digital marketing.
 
My passion is helping students reach their English learning goals. Whether you need help with English conversation, preparing for study/business abroad, taking the TOEFL or TOEIC, or with business English, I'm here to support you every step of the way. Let's study and have fun together!

Accepting New Students — (With a Few Conditions)

I am happy to welcome motivated new learners who are serious about improving their English.

Because my schedule is quite full and I work closely with each student’s personal goals, I currently accept new students who:

• are intermediate level or above

• want to improve speaking fluency, communication skills, or professional English

• are open to regular lessons (not just one-time sessions)

• are willing to actively participate and speak during lessons

My lessons are highly interactive and personalized. Students looking for real conversation practice, business or professional communication, interview preparation, vocabulary expansion, and more natural expression are usually a great fit.

If a student is a complete beginner, looking only for test drilling, or prefers very passive-style lessons, I may not be the best match. In that case, Cafetalk offers many excellent tutors who specialize in those areas.

I invest a lot in each student and aim to build long-term learning partnerships.
