Hello! I'm James, and I'm genuinely passionate about sharing knowledge and fostering a love for learning across diverse fields, from English language proficiency to the depths of Christian theological inquiry. My approach is patient, encouraging, and highly student-centred. I believe that learning thrives in a relaxed yet focused atmosphere where you feel comfortable making mistakes – because that's where the real growth happens!
Think of our lessons as a supportive collaboration. While I bring a structured approach based on my academic background and teaching certifications, I'm also very adaptable and flexible. As your English tutor, I love to tailor each session precisely to your unique goals, whether that's building fluency in conversational English and gaining confidence to chat freely, or navigating the rich landscape of Church history and mastering complex theological concepts. I'm not just here to teach; I'm here to facilitate your journey, providing clear guidance, insightful feedback, and plenty of opportunities for you to explore and express yourself.
I often use real-world examples, engaging discussions, and interactive activities to bring subjects to life. My aim is to make even challenging topics accessible and enjoyable, ensuring you not only understand the material but also feel genuinely inspired by it. You'll find me to be attentive, a good listener, and enthusiastic about your progress.
My Journey & Interests (Beyond the Classroom)
My path to becoming a tutor has been shaped by a deep curiosity about the world and a desire to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
My Global Perspective: My 24 ECTS TEFL qualification from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) and two years teaching English in Spain as an Auxiliar de Conversación (English Language Assistant) were incredibly formative. Living and working within Spanish communities broadened my understanding of language acquisition challenges firsthand and instilled in me a profound appreciation for cultural exchange. I loved helping students gain confidence and seeing their English skills blossom in a real-world context. This experience taught me the importance of patience, adaptability, and making learning relevant to students' lives.
A Love for Deep Thinking: My First-Class MA Hons in Theology and Religion from the University of Aberdeen cultivated in me a profound passion for Christian theology and the depth of Church history. I am deeply passionate about delving into the foundational texts and doctrinal development that have shaped Christian thought through the ages. My joy comes from guiding students through challenging historical and theological concepts, fostering rigorous critical thinking, and helping them develop a nuanced, biblically-informed understanding of these rich and vital subjects. I find immense satisfaction in seeing students grasp the depth and coherence of the Christian tradition.
Beyond Academics: Outside of my teaching and theological studies, you'll often find me exploring historical sites or delving into classic literature. These pursuits not only fuel my curiosity but also provide wonderful, fresh perspectives that I love to weave into our conversations.
I truly believe that learning should be an enriching and enjoyable experience. I'm excited to meet you and embark on this learning journey together!
