Let’s discuss The Big Five of South Africa.

1. Warm-Up.

Activity: Quick discussion

Have you ever been on a safari game drive or seen wild animals up close?

Which animal do you think is the most powerful or dangerous in Africa, and why?

2. Reading & Vocabulary

Reading Text:
The Big Five refers to the lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. They were once considered the most dangerous animals for hunters, but today they are symbols of South Africa’s natural heritage. Each of these animals represents strength and resilience. The lion is admired for its power, the elephant for its intelligence, the buffalo for its unpredictability, the leopard for its stealth, and the rhinoceros for its toughness. Millions of tourists visit South Africa to see them in the wild, making conservation efforts essential.

Vocabulary Check:

Resilience.

Stealth.

Unpredictable.

Conservation.

Task: Students read aloud (or silently), then match words to their meanings.

3. Discussion & Critical Thinking.

Questions for discussion:

1. Which of the Big Five would you most like to see in the wild? Why?

2. Do you think wild animals should only be viewed in national parks, or is it acceptable to keep them in zoos?

3. Tourism brings money but can also harm the environment. How can countries balance tourism and conservation?

4. The Big Five are famous worldwide. What animals from your country could represent its culture or spirit?

4. Communication Activity.

 Debate

Group A: Wildlife conservationists who argue for strict protection of the Big Five.

Group B: Local communities who argue they need land and resources for farming.

Short debate: How can both sides work together?

5. Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

Review key words (resilience, stealth, conservation).

Final reflection: “What lesson can humans learn from the Big Five?”

✅ By the end of the lesson, students will have:

Improved reading and vocabulary skills

Practiced speaking and debating in English

Gained cultural knowledge about South Africa and wildlife
