Lesson Title: The Impact of social media on your lives.

Skill focus: Speaking (giving opinion, agreeing/disagreeing, giving counter arguments)

Student level: B1 (intermediate)

Lesson Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:

1.       Provide his/ her opinion using expressions like ‘in my opinion, I think, I believe..’

2.       Agree/disagree using expressions like ‘I agree, I see your point, but..’

3.       Provide counterarguments to some ideas.

 

This lesson is composed of 3 parts:

1.       Vocabulary pre-teaching. (15 minutes)

2.       Role-play activity with the teacher. (20 minutes)

3.       Final thoughts / opinions. (10 minutes)

 

1.       Stage 1: Vocabulary pre-teaching:

Objectives:

·         To introduce opinion expressions (In my opinion, I think, I believe…).

·         To introduce expressions of agreement/ disagreement.

Procedure:

During this stage, the teacher asks the student questions that require him/her to provide their opinion. The teacher then introduces the expressions required to express an opinion in a natural way.

The teacher then provides sentences/ideas and asks the student if they agree/disagree. The teacher prompts the student to expand on their ideas.

Note: During this stage, the teacher drills the new expressions and makes sure the student is pronouncing them correctly.

 

2.       Stage 2: Debate activity: Parent vs. Influencer:

Objective:

During this stage, student will be able to:

·         Freely defend their position using relevant argument, opinion expressions and agreement/disagreement expressions.

Procedure:

During the stage, the student assumes the role of the influencer or parent. The student has 5 minutes to prepare his/her arguments using the previously learnt expressions and ideas.

The student then debates the teacher. The student is encouraged to use as many expressions as possible and to expand on their ideas. The teacher takes note of recurrent errors and errors that hinder meaning.

3.       Stage 3: feedback and final thoughts:

The teacher praises the student for the effort.

The teacher asks the student to conduct a self-assessment.

The teacher provides feedback, corrects mistakes and suggests areas of improvement.

 

Note 1: After the lesson, the teacher provides the student with a worksheet with all the main ideas discussed during the lesson as well as any necessary homework to consolidate the newly acquired vocabulary or expressions. The teacher can also include written corrections to the students’ errors.

Note 2: Teacher talking time is minimal. The teacher’s role is to guide and prompt the student to express themselves as much as possible.
