Introduction (10 min) Hook & Prior Knowledge Start with an engaging statistic: "Nearly 250 million people get malaria each year, and over 600,000 die, mostly children in Africa". Ask students if they or anyone they know has travelled to a region where Malaria is a risk. Define Malaria as a disease caused by a parasite (Plasmodium) spread by the female Anopheles mosquito.
Explanation (20 min) Transmission and SymptomsTransmission: Explain the basic life cycle using a diagram: Infected mosquito bites human, parasite enters bloodstream, multiplies in the liver, then invades and destroys red blood cells. When another mosquito bites the infected person, it picks up the parasite and spreads it further.
Symptoms: Describe common symptoms, which are often flu-like: high fever, shaking chills, sweating, headaches, nausea, and muscle pain. Emphasise that symptoms can be cyclical and fatal if untreated.
Conclusion (20 min) | Review and Discussion | Students share their top prevention tips. Q&A session to clarify misconceptions. Conclude by emphasising that while curable and preventable, Malaria remains a serious global health issue.
