listening skills; paraphrase and avoiding distracting answers
課程介紹
Introduction:
I begin by introducing the book and how to use it, how we will use it in the class and the different sections of the book. I explain that listening (like reading) is an input skill or a receptive skill as opposed to speaking or writing, which are productive output skills.
I explain how the test is assessed and what criteria is needed for which score. I ask the learner what score they need to achieve and how long they have to practice before taking the test.
We go over the different stages of the listening test and start slow with simple listening tasks, then build up to higher ones as we go, I check the learner's pace and level of comfort along the way.
Listening:
We start the actual listening part by assigning different topics to the different stages of the listening test as explained earlier. Then, we move to explain what paraphrase means on the IELTS listening test and how to understand it. We use a series of exercises from the book and my own materials to gradually identify and understand paraphrase to answer IELTS listening questions successfully.
Next, we learn about distractors -a common trend on IELTS questions- and break down listening pieces to single out the correct answers, identify "why" they are the correct answers, and why the others should be excluded as the wrong answers. This process is done according to the comfortable speed of the individual learner.
Wrap up:
To end the lesson, I advise the learner on tools to use to recognize different English accents as self study resources in between lessons and to prepare for future lessons.
