Watch NHK’s “Mukashibanashi Courtroom” and discuss in Japanese: guilty or not guilty? For learners at JLPT N2 level and above

Description

What if characters from famous fairy tales were put on trial—what verdict would they receive?

In this lesson, we use NHK’s “Mukashibanashi Courtroom” to help you think in Japanese and develop the ability to express your opinions clearly.

🗓 Lesson Flow (60 minutes)

① Watch a video (15–20 minutes)
Watch a video based on a courtroom case from a well-known fairy tale and understand the story.

② Comprehension check (10–15 minutes)
・Why did the case go to trial?
・What did the defendant do?
・What are the key issues?

Organize the information and prepare for the discussion.

③ Discussion (25 minutes)
Discuss the theme: “Guilty or not guilty?” in Japanese.

Examples of useful expressions:
・I think that…
・Because…
・On the other hand…
・That may be true, but…

Deepen your ideas by explaining your reasoning.
By asking questions and considering different perspectives, you will develop more practical conversation skills.

This lesson does not focus on “winning” the argument, but on exploring different viewpoints.
Through discussion, you may discover new ideas—and it’s perfectly okay if your opinion changes.

Feel free to express your thoughts openly in a relaxed environment.
