Halloween Traditions Around the World

今週のテーマ: 世界のハロウィンの習慣

Assal

Have you ever wondered how people celebrate Halloween in different parts of the world? Although Halloween is often associated with costumes, pumpkins, and trick-or-treating, traditions can vary greatly from one country to another.

The United States and Canada

In the United States and Canada, Halloween is a popular celebration, especially among children. People decorate their homes with pumpkins, ghosts, and skeletons, while children dress up as their favorite characters and go trick-or-treating. They visit houses in their neighborhoods and ask for candy by saying, “Trick or treat!” Many adults also enjoy Halloween parties, costume contests, and spooky movie nights.

Ireland: The Origins of Halloween

Did you know that Halloween has roots in an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain? It originated in Ireland and marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Traditional celebrations included bonfires and customs connected to the belief that the boundary between the living and the dead became thinner at this time of year. Today, Ireland celebrates Halloween with costumes, parties, fireworks, and traditional games.

Mexico: Día de los Muertos

In Mexico, Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, takes place on November 1 and 2. Although it happens around the same time as Halloween, it is a different celebration with its own cultural and spiritual meaning. Families remember loved ones who have passed away by creating colorful altars, decorating graves, and preparing their favorite foods. Marigold flowers, candles, photographs, and sugar skulls are common features of this beautiful tradition.

Japan: A Celebration of Costumes

In Japan, Halloween has become particularly popular as a time for dressing up and enjoying themed events. People wear creative costumes, attend parties, and visit Halloween attractions. In some places, Halloween is more about fashion, entertainment, and taking photos than traditional trick-or-treating.

What About Other Countries?

Not every country celebrates Halloween in the same way, and some people do not celebrate it at all. Even in countries where Halloween is popular, families may have their own traditions, such as watching scary movies, carving pumpkins, or preparing special treats.

Personally, I find it fascinating how celebrations can bring people together while reflecting different cultures, histories, and beliefs. Learning about traditions from around the world reminds us that there are many ways to celebrate, remember, and connect with others.

Now, I’d love to hear from you!

  • Is Halloween celebrated in your country?

  • Have you ever dressed up in a Halloween costume?

  • Which of these traditions would you most like to experience?

  • Does your country have a festival or tradition that takes place around this time of year?

Feel free to share your experiences in the comments. I’d love to learn about the traditions you grew up with!
