Halloween Horror Movie - Addendum - Horror Subgenres

今週のテーマ: 世界のハロウィンの習慣

Samuel

Not everyone likes horror films, and that’s fair enough: being scared isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. However, horror isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ genre, and if you’re the type of person who usually doesn’t enjoy horror, maybe, just maybe, you haven’t found the type that suits you.

Here are a few horror subgenres for your consideration.

1. Cosmic Horror

Cosmic horror explores the idea that there are things in the universe that are so strange, powerful and incomprehensible that human beings simply cannot understand them. Often, the horror comes from the realisation that we are insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Recommended: The Thing (1982)

2. Horror Comedy

As the name suggests, horror comedy combines frightening situations with humour. Sometimes the comedy comes from ridiculous situations, while at other times it’s the contrast between genuinely horrifying events and funny dialogue or characters. It’s a difficult balance to get right, but when it works, it works brilliantly.

Recommended: An American Werewolf in London (1981)

3. Action Horror

Action horror combines the frightening elements of traditional horror with the excitement and pace of an action film. Expect weapons, explosions, dangerous creatures and characters fighting for their survival. These films often have plenty of thrills and excitement alongside their horror elements.

Recommended: Blade (1998)

4. Psychological Horror

Psychological horror focuses on the human mind, exploring fears such as paranoia, obsession, guilt and losing touch with reality. Rather than relying on monsters or supernatural creatures, these films often make us question what is real and what is happening inside a character’s mind.

Recommended: Black Swan (2010)

5. Folk Horror

Folk horror draws inspiration from traditional beliefs, folklore, ancient rituals and isolated communities. These films often feature strange customs, mysterious traditions and a sense that something sinister is hiding beneath the surface of an otherwise peaceful setting.

Recommended: The Wicker Man (1973)

So, what kind of horror appeals to you?

As you can see, horror comes in many different shapes and sizes. Whether you enjoy science fiction, comedy, action, psychological drama or stories about strange traditions, there’s a good chance that there’s a horror film out there that you’ll enjoy.

Perhaps you just haven’t found it yet!
