The beauty of Clivias

Teacher Hanne

We all love colourful flowers! One of my favourites are Clivias. These beautiful flowering plants are native to Southern Africa. These lilies grow naturally in shady areas so they do not tolerate sun very well. They are popular garden plants all over the world because they are easy to care for and can live for many years.

The most famous Clivia flowers are bright orange, but today there are many different colours. At a recent Clivia show, I could enjoy seeing yellow, cream, red, peach, pink, and even light green flowers. Some flowers even have two or more colours! There are also many different hybrids, with different flower shapes and sizes.

Clivias are special because they combine natural beauty with the variety created by plant breeders. Another great thing is that Clivias can make excellent houseplants!

Some interesting facts about the name: The genus name Clivia was named in honour of Lady Charlotte Clive, an English aristocratic woman. The name was given by the English botanist John Lindley when he described the plant in 1828.

Do you also love these lilies? Hope you can enjoy them too.
