Last year, a friend recommended a Netflix series of which I had never heard. The title, itself, Bon Appetit, Your Majesty, intrigued me. When she mentioned that the series opened in Paris, I was hooked. However, I could not have anticipated the sumptuous world I was about to enter. In addition to visually stunning costumes and a captivating story, the series features delicious and inventive cuisine (which the viewer can only imagine enjoying).
The first part of the title "Bon Appetit," refers to the female lead in the story, Ji-yeong, a 21st century Michelin Starred chef. The second part of the title "Your Majesty" refers to the notorious Joseon Era king Lee Heon. The story begins when Ji-yeong is unexpectedly transported to the Joseon Era while flying home from Paris. This is where the magic begins because, of course, she meets Lee Heon, who is not at all like the tyrannical image history books portray.
The reason that an episode of Bon Appetit, Your Majesty is perfect for movie night is that it features cooking, creativity (as Ji-yeong adapts her dishes to the needs of the Joseon Court), and adventure. The colorful and elegant costumes transport the viewer to an era of unparalleled luxury while the delicious and refined dishes leave one longing for Joseon cuisine. Of course, drama and suspense are never lacking.
