When You Lose Your Words.... Learning How to Recover Yourself

Suja

Many of us sometimes do not catch a question or we stumble with our response. Sometimes, we retract and choose to change the idea midway as we respons. Other times, we forget vocabularies, or realise the sentence is not coming out the way you intended.

Many learners experience this moment, especially when they are speaking under pressure. Sometimes the challenge is not a lack of English ability, but the pressure to say everything perfectly. When we focus too much on avoiding mistakes, it can become difficult to think clearly and continue speaking naturally.

One important skill that confident speakers develop is the ability to recover.

In real conversations, even fluent speakers pause, rephrase their ideas, or change the way they explain something. They might say:

  • “Let me explain that in another way.”
  • “What I mean is…”
  • “Perhaps I should put it differently.”
  • “Let me think about that for a moment.”

These expressions are not signs of weakness. They are tools that help communication continue.

Sometimes learners feel that if they make a mistake, they have already lost confidence or given a poor answer. However, a small mistake or moment of hesitation does not define your speaking ability. What matters is how you respond and whether you can guide your listener back to your main idea.

If you notice that your answer is becoming unclear, take a moment, reorganise your thoughts, and continue.

In a workplace discussion, an interview, or a casual conversation, being able to recover calmly helps you become a more confident communicator.

Improving English is not about never making mistakes. It is about developing the confidence to keep communicating, even when things do not go exactly as planned. ??
